Ramen-tic Interlude, 2023

This social sculpture centered around making ramen, explores themes of separation and nonverbal communication. By having the participants sit in chairs spaced apart and facing away from each other, I am creating a sense of isolation and separation from the group. Through the visual telephone game they must play to make the ramen, they are forced to communicate nonverbally, which can be a powerful experience.

In addition, I am having the participants wear GoPros on their heads, inspired by Gary Hill's "Crux," to capture their perspective and create a more immersive experience. This adds another layer of separation, as the audience is able to see what the participants are seeing, but still cannot interact with them directly.

The use of written instructions to direct the group is inspired by Yoko Ono's Instruction Paintings and Stelarc's use of instructions in his performances. These minimal, open-ended instructions encourage personal interpretation and creativity from the participants.

This project is also influenced by Marina Abramović's "An Artist is Present," which explores the power of nonverbal communication to connect with others, as well as the film "Tampopo," which uses ramen as a metaphor for life and relationships.

Overall, my project seeks to create a sense of separation and isolation within the group, while also encouraging nonverbal communication and creativity. Through the act of making ramen, the participants are able to connect with each other in a unique and meaningful way, despite the barriers that separate them.
