Aw Shucks!, 2023
In this thought-provoking time-based media piece, I draw inspiration from the works of artists such as Bruce Nauman, Juzo Itami, Richard Serra, and Yvonne Rainer. Like Nauman's "Washing Hands - Normal," Rainer's "Hand Movie," and Serra’s “Hand Catching Lead” this piece explores the body's relationship with the natural world and the way in which we interact with it. Through the act of shucking an oyster, I break down the barrier between nature and humans, highlighting the cyclical harmony between taking and giving. The video includes the time stamp from the camcorder recording on a tape, which is displayed throughout the piece, emphasizing the temporal nature of the work. As I break through the oyster's protective layer, I am reminded of the equal and opposite forces that two interacting objects apply to each other, as described by Newton's third law. The constructed synchronicity in this piece invites the viewer to reflect on the interconnectedness of all things and how nature often mirrors our own internal reality. By embracing this synchronicity, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit.
