Double-Edged Sword, 2020
This powerful series of two photographs by a biracial woman artist captures the complexity of racial identity and prejudice. The first photo shows the artist with a stone-faced expression, holding a sign with hurtful words such as "whitey," "oreo," and "you have no melanin." In the second photo, the artist wears blackface, challenging viewers to confront their own biases and preconceptions about race. Through her art, the artist exposes the discrimination and ostracism she has experienced from both black and white communities, revealing the vulnerability of her personal journey towards self-acceptance. Inspired by Adrian Piper's work, this poignant piece speaks to the bravery required to confront difficult truths about race and identity.
