Impasta Syndrome, 2023
My video of pasta making is inspired by the concept of succession, which refers to the orderly progression of one thing following another in a specific sequence. To create a contrasting effect, I experimented with sound in the video, using intentionally disorienting and dissonant music and sound effects that create a sense of chaos and disruption. This was inspired by Bruce Nauman's 'Clown Torture', Juzo Itami's 'Tampopo', Peter Greenaway's 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover', and Rirkrit Tiravanija's 'Pad Thai', all of which use food and cooking processes to explore themes of power, domination, and disruption.
Like Nauman's work, my video explores the tension between order and disorder, highlighting the potential for chaos and disruption in even the most seemingly orderly processes. Like Itami's 'Tampopo', my work explores the cultural and social significance of food and cooking, emphasizing the importance of tradition and ritual in the culinary arts. Similarly, Greenaway's 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover' uses food and cooking processes to explore themes of power, domination, and sexuality, which are also present in my work. Finally, Tiravanija's 'Pad Thai' invites the viewer to participate in the cooking process, blurring the boundaries between art and life, a concept that I also explored in my video.
Through my work, I aim to create a thought-provoking and immersive experience that encourages viewers to reflect on the complex and dynamic nature of ecological succession, the role of tradition and ritual in the culinary arts, and the potential for chaos and disruption in even the most seemingly orderly processes.
